about me

I have been writing about travel, architecture and design for nearly 20 years. I strive to write in a way that inspires curiosity in those who are not unfamiliar with a subject, while providing new pleasures and insights for those who are.

For Lonely Planet, I have authored or co-authored guides to BrazilFlorenceItaly, Venice and the Veneto, Portugal, West Africa, Colombia and California. I write regularly for the Beirut-based magazine Aishti

My work has also appeared in Dwell, the Los Angeles Times, the London Daily Telegraph, the Miami Herald, the San Jose Mercury Newsand many others.

I also write short stories and personal essays, and have published photos in many newspapers as well as Lonely Planet travel books.

I live in Rio de Janeiro with my partner Thiago Fico and our two troublesome cats.
